Pura Earthship Costa Rica – July 25, 2014 7pm-8:30pm

at Nosara Retreat with Jonah Reynolds

Jonah Reynolds, the guest speaker for the evening, is part of a dedicated group focused on sustaining people through affordable and appropriate buildings and systems.

An “earthship” is a sustainable building method with integrated systems supporting total off-grid living.  These construction methods and systems can be applied to existing conventional buildings to retrofit or upgrade them.  Imagine…….a structure made from recycled and/or local area materials that maintains a comfortable indoor temperature year round and allows you to live totally off the grid!!

Earthship structures are built with recycled or indigenous materials occurring naturally in the local area.  Along with this, systems are either built in or put in place to allow total off-grid living.  For example, water is captured from the sky and used four times, such as using grey water to flush toilets.  Electricity is produced with a prepackaged photovoltaic / wind power system.  This energy is stored in batteries and supplied to electrical outlets.  Heating and cooling is achieved from the thermal mass in the structure of the building.  Cooling tubes can deliver cooled air with no electricity as needed.  All household sewage is contained, used and reused via indoor and/or outdoor treatment cells which allow for food production and landscaping with no pollution of aquifers.  Sewage treatment cells are also wetlands.  These planters hold hundreds of gallons of water from sinks and the shower and are great places to grow healthy foods.
